Watching Christian Vazquez behind the plate is a gift that keeps on giving. The way he controls a game. The dance he performs behind the plate, the cannon he possesses. He has everything a baseball junkie wants in a catcher( Almost). If you’re someone like me you ache to watch a player like Vazquez. He’s the type of player you pay to see when they come to town and the people of Red Sox Nation get to watch him every day. Eddie Rosario became a victim of the cannon i mentioned earlier. after doubling in the fifth he tried to take third on Vazquez. Sorry son Not today. That’s Six of Seven this spring. He also caught ByungHo Park napping at second and sent him to the bench on a put out, just another day at the office.
The rub if there is one: In Thirty AB this spring he is Batting just .233 with two extra base hits. three of his four RBI came Sunday afternoon. Personally i could care less.Vazquez also went yard for the first time this spring Sunday, for all i care it could be the last time he goes yard all year. I still want to see this man behind the plate every day.
A lot has been made of who will throw to Vazquez and who will throw to Sandy Leon. who hit a more than respectable .310 in 2016 but is batting a robust .231 this spring himself, the whys and wherefores of this split behind the plate was pointed out in a great piece by Christopher Smith in Masslive.com last week. Please check it out. But i say forget all that. What the Sox have is a gunslinger behind the dish. Tell this staff to posse up and get with the program. There’s a new sheriff in town and his name is Christian Vazquez.
